José Richard Ortiz is a Ph.D. candidate in Agri-Food Sciences through a program sponsored by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mescyt) under an agreement between the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and Miguel Hernández University in Spain. He holds a Master of Science in Plant Breeding from Iowa State University, USA. Ortiz is an adjunct professor at UASD, a principal researcher in agri-food sciences for the National Career of Researchers (CNI) Mescyt in the Dominican Republic (#696 - 2019), and a principal researcher at the Dominican Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Research (Idiaf). He serves as the focal point for the Dominican Republic in the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Tirfaa). Ortiz is an expert in the management of plant genetic resources, statistics, and agronomic crop management (crop science). He heads the Department of Technology Dissemination and Transfer at Idiaf, coordinating technology transfer units, the production of print and audiovisual media, agricultural information and documentation centers, and the management of communication and social media for the institution. He has proven experience in managing plant genetic resources for cereals (maize and sorghum), vegetables (squash, tomato, peppers, eggplant, and okra), and fruit crops in the Dominican Republic.
