Agronomist (Central University of Ecuador) with a Ph.D. in Planning and Management of Sustainable Rural Development Projects from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Principal Investigator 4, the highest rank in the country's research hierarchy. He has spent his entire professional career at INIAP for 35 years and is currently the head of the Agricultural Economics and Climate Change Unit at INIAP, based at the Santa Catalina Experimental Station. He has authored and coordinated at least 30 research/development projects with institutions such as CIP, ILRI, IPM, and SANREM CRSP, PROMSA, SENACYT, MAE, Virginia Tech, Penn State, ARS-USDA, among others. He is the author and co-author of more than 50 publications in indexed journals, books, and book chapters. In 2017, he, together with the INIAP and Virginia Tech research team, won the 2nd Agroeconomic Research Competition with four socio-economic and environmental studies conducted by FAO-IICA-MAGAP. Since 2006, Dr. Barrera, along with his team, has conducted research on conservation agriculture practices as mechanisms for climate change adaptation, which are now used by farmers in the micro-watersheds, sub-watersheds, and watersheds where these practices have been studied and transferred.
