Santiago is a researcher speciallized in milk production systems. He currently leads the National Milk Production Research Program of INIA Uruguay. He is an Agricultural engineer graduated In Agricultural Collegue of Balcarce from Mar del Plata University, Argentina (1999-2004). He got his PhD. at Sydney University, Australia (2006-2010) working in sustainable intensification of grass feeding dairy systems, also he worked in transfer project and farmer advice.
Santiago is originally from Ayacucho, Argentina, and grew up on a cattle farm. In that country he was Coordinator of the Dairy Area for the largest network of producer discussion groups (AACREA), where he had to lead 3 national projects. In the private sector he has worked as a consultant for companies in Argentina, Chile, USA and India.
He is currently leading research and transfer projects on grazing management, intensification of pastoral systems, robotized voluntary systems, among others. He is currently leading a FONTAGRO project on Sustainable Intensification of Dairy Farming that includes 11 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
He is the author of more than 40 scientific and dissemination publications related to dairy.
