Agro-organic Association of Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Paving the Way for the Agro-Organic Bioeconomy in Guanacaste
Context of the story
Guanacaste, located in northwestern Costa Rica, is a province known for its vast lands and rich biodiversity but has a low population density compared to other regions. Despite its natural wealth, it faces significant sustainable development challenges, particularly in agriculture. Agriculture, a traditional economic pillar, supports between 18% and 25% of the population. However, conventional methods pose environmental problems, and local farmers lack knowledge and resources to produce high-value organic products. To address these issues, the Agro-organic Association of Guanacaste was founded, providing affordable certification and continuous training, transforming the agricultural landscape.
Guanacaste Organic Agriculture Association: Driving the Local Bioeconomy through Sustainable and Organic Practices
The implemented initiative
The Guanacaste Organic Agriculture Association has boosted the bioeconomy in Guanacaste through the production and conservation of biological resources, promoting sustainable and organic agricultural practices since 2009. With 22 members, 10 of whom are transitioning to organic farming, they have implemented a Participatory Organic Certification model and created direct distribution channels, increasing profits for producers. Their approach has improved local socioeconomic stability and reduced negative environmental impacts, demonstrating the potential of the local bioeconomy.
The Transformative Legacy of the Guanacaste Organic Agriculture Association in the Local Bioeconomy
The technological solution
The Guanacaste Organic Agriculture Association has transformed the local bioeconomy in Guanacaste by shifting from conventional to organic and sustainable farming practices. With 30 active members, they have implemented participatory certifications and created direct distribution channels, eliminating intermediaries and increasing producers' incomes. Beyond economic improvement, they have reduced the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, benefiting the environment. The Association has also strengthened community cohesion, promoting gender equity and inclusion, positively impacting the quality of life for the province's residents.
I was invited to join the Costa Rican Organic Agriculture Movement (MAOCO). From that point on, my life took a significant turn.
