The webinar titled “Valuing Mango Peels” was successfully held, as part of the project financed by FONTAGRO: “Strengthening the competitiveness of mango producers in Colombia and Peru through the comprehensive use of the fruit and development of new products”. This project is executed by the University of Tolima - Colombia and the National University of Trujillo - Peru, in collaboration with the Horticultural Association (ASOHOFRUCOL – Colombia) and the Association for Agricultural Science and Innovation of the Northern Network (AGRORED NORTE – Peru).

The event brought together researchers and producer leaders from both countries with the aim of sharing a comprehensive approach to maximizing mango utilization, recognizing its commercial potential and value generation from its various components.

As part of an effort to improve agricultural competitiveness and promote sustainability, this project focuses on using mango byproducts, such as peels and seeds, which are often discarded. Members of this binational initiative are leading the promotion of biorefinery techniques that will not only help mitigate hunger and improve health but also open new business opportunities and contribute to environmental sustainability.

During the event, it was emphasized that, based on the chemical analysis of mango peels, their high content of polyphenols and essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium has been identified, which can be applied in various industries, including cosmetics.

This project is based on collaboration between agricultural producers and researchers, reinforcing the connection between scientific knowledge and its commercial applications. As workshops and feasibility studies are conducted, it is expected that the integration of innovative techniques will transform agricultural resource management, offering producers new avenues to increase their income through the valorization of their products.
